I expected it.. The sound was deafening, or should I say the sounds. I couldn't convince myself to go outside for I was afraid that the next one will be thrown on me. The fireworks went on and on and on and..... Well I can't say how much joy I felt on reaching the new year. Everyone around was dancing and singing. Outside the Church it was something else. It was as if the pastor had shouted "war start" but what I heard was happy new year. The fireworks this year sounded louder and they were bigger. I couldn't sleep in church so I had to start moving home. I have never been in a civil war before but I guess what was happening outside was close to it. There were no guns but the fireworks were so loud you couldn't differentiate from them and guns some even sounded like grenades. My brother had told me some of these fireworks are expensive ranging from #30 to #5000.
It isn't bad to be in the festive mood but using fireworks that are as dangerous as guns isn't the best way to celebrate.
A woman's son lies in the hospital with a hole in his head because someone misfired a rocket. Another man is thinking about paying for a flat screen TV of about #20000 all because of 500naira firework.
From observation most of the people who shoot these fireworks without care are people who barely have three square meals.
What can we then say? Is it ignorance?
Or is it war?
Let us live in peace and live wisely.
Happy new year
