In the past weeks our dear
President has made varying statements, as he campaigns nationwide campaign,
seeking re-election.
One of such statements include ‘’Return me to
power and I will set up structures to fight corruption’’, ‘’I will use technology
to tackle corruption’’.
Given little thought these
statements might pass as a typical campaign statement. But if read in-between
line, It is an unwitting acceptance of failure to fight corruption.
This lead to my conclusion, that the
presidency did not premeditate on his statements, because its perceived meaning
was not his intent.
Be that as it may, it cannot be gainsaid that
the presidents four year term has being characterized by impunity, outright
looting with no fear of being reprimanded by the law.
Allegations of laundering making
headlines regularly, some ascertained as true, some discredited and others die
a natural death because they were not in favour of the high and mighty.
Hitherto President Jonathan stated
in an interview that ‘’ stealing and corruption are unrelated,’’ Corruption is
not Nigeria’s problem’’. Taking cognizance of this statement, I don’t see how
the President will tackle corruption when it is not seen as a problem.
Nothing better encapsulates the performance
of Presidency in respect to fighting corruption than the term ‘’A colossal
failure’’ so much so that his past predecessors, whose names have gone down in
infamy for heading a corrupt government. Now hold their heads up and boost of
performing better than the President in context. Kettles calling a pot black.
There is no telling how much the
presidencies corruption tackling ineptitude will hurt his return bid. As it has
left much to be desired of his capabilities in fighting corruption which has
bedeviled the country and is chiefly the main cause of her woes.
The presidencies recent statements
and actions , ‘’we ask for change and we get a 10 naira change on Pump price reduction’’. Give’s
a hint of his increasing desperation as well as his uncertainty in winning his
return ticket. Understandable, given that his political goodwill have is
waning. Party Faithfuls, Key office holders are defecting to the main
opposition with the election days away.
