To some it was entertaining, to others it was a threat. Earlier this week Sapele traders were entertained by two chimpanzees brought by two men even though some saw it as a threat.
At first we thought the men brought the chimpanzees to cause havoc because their entrance wasn't entertaining at all. They were very violent and were trying to break free from their chains. The two chimpanzees picked anything and used on people, tried to fight people and even tried to enter stores(we all know they don't want to buy anything) this caused some traders to run. While others that were not affected laughed.
Whatever the men said to the chimpanzees we do not know but all of a sudden they stopped the violence and started dancing and doing acrobatics. Some one even said "these ones are gymnasts".
The chimpanzees then sat down and refused to do anything, children gathered to watch. They were waiting for the chimpanzees to start dancing again but it seemed like the chimpanzees were set not to do anything again. Then people started commenting on the negativity of bringing the chimpanzees to the market. "This men should take these Ebola away from this place o" one onlooker said. "Nor be this animal nai de carry Ebola? Why them go bring am come market when busy"(is this not the animal that carries Ebola why would they bring it to a crowded place like this?) Another onlooker said.
In their own way they are trying to be safe but we cannot deny it I.e those of us here who witnessed it, that the animals were not entertaining. They were and for a moment I saw happiness on the faces of children and some adults. Sometimes we all need a little distraction to take us away from the worries of this world. As the chimpanzees were taken away crowd of children followed them and people snapped pictures.
